Creative misreading of a painted inscription on the tiles which sealed St. Philomena’s tomb in Rome: lumena/paxte/cumfi became “pax tecum filumena”. So she was called Philomena, a life was immediately written for her, and miracles followed. Her cult was only suppressed in 1960’s.
For India, see the cult of St. Expedit, apparently created out of the Italian word spedito (“sent”) affixed to the container of otherwise unidentified relics which had been sent from Rome to the island of Reunion in 1931. The saint is now the unofficial patron of the island.
