Niciodata sa nu citesti fara sa asculti.

In 1752, teologul englez Francis Lee publica o carte destul de stufoasa (2 vol.) cu un titlu aiurit:

Apoleipomena; or, Dissertations theological, mathematical, and physical: with a critical commentary on the most difficult places of the Book of Genesis. Vol. I + Vol. II.

Iata ce spunea el acolo:

[Vol. I, pp. 173 – 174]

Lee tuna si fulgera impotriva ideei vehiculate in lumea pagana privind asa numita spontaneous sau equivocal generation. Fiind o “heathen science”, dupa propriile cuvinte, el sustine ca o asemenea idee trebuie abandonata. Si iata ce propune in loc:

“even the most perfect Animals, do begin from a Principle of Vermination. And that even Man himself is at first truly and literally no better that a Worm, before the Ascension of a higher and nobler Life. It appears […] that the Beginning of the Production of Animals should be declared […] in the Waters.”

Evident, Lee nu a fost primul care sa sustina asa ceva. Si nici ultimul. Darwin’s On the Origin of Species urma sa fie publicata un secol mai tarziu (1859):

“When I view all beings not as special creations, but as the lineal descendants of some few beings […] they seem to me to become ennobled.”
