Cu 75 de ani in urma, in vara anului 1935, Frances Yates a inceput sa studieze la colegiul Girlton, Cambridge, limba italiana.

“Here she met other Renaissance scholars who became important corespondents and, in some cases, as with Nesca Robb and Linetta di Castelvecchio Richardson, lifelong friends. It was a wonderfully stimulating program; the list of instructors - several were women - was impressive. among them were Mario Praz from the University of Rome, who has reviewed Yates’ Florio for La Stampa, John Purvis of the University of Edinburgh, Professor Walter Starkie of Trinity College, Dublin, the renowned Oxford Renaissance scholar Miss C.M. Ady (cecelia Mary, 1881 - 1958), Miss D. Cadell of the Courtauld Institute, the Dante scholar L. de Castelvecchio Richardson (1886 - 1975), N. Robb (who wrote about Neoplatonism and later became a good friend of Yates), K.T. Butler (Kathleen Theresa, who wrote about Pallavicino), K.M. Lea (Kathleen Marguerite, from 1947 to 1971 principal at Oxford’s Lady Margaret Hall where Yates became a frequent visitor and lecturer), Barbara Barclay Carter (who lectured on Dante), and Miss Juliana Cotton, lecturer in Renaissance poetry at the University of Liverpool. As was customary, most of the female scholars were identified only by their first initials, perhaps to disguise the fact that they were women, which may have diminished their chances for recognition and publication. In fact in 1948, Olivia Manning told a BBC reporter that, for her early books, she choose initials because of a prejudice against women writers at the time“.

Cu cativa ani in urma a aparut un DVD foarte interesant in care, intr-o maniera turistica foarte decenta, sunt luate la rand si prezentate istoric cateva dintre cele mai importante colegii din Cambridge.
